Where it came from
Eliminate was introduced in the Magic: The Gathering Core Set 2021, a set designed by Wizards of the Coast to serve as a bridge between established mechanical themes and introductory play. Released in July 2020, the card was crafted to function as a versatile removal spell within the black color identity, specifically targeting lower-cost creatures and planeswalkers to provide players with a reliable answer to aggressive early-game strategies.
The card features illustration by Johann Bodin, who focused on a dark, visceral aesthetic to reflect the spell's function of removing threats from the battlefield. Upon its release, Eliminate was well-received by the competitive community for its mana efficiency and flexibility, becoming a staple of standard formats during its tenure by offering a balanced response to the meta-game's prevalence of low-to-mid-cost permanents.
