Where it came from
Animal Sanctuary was released in 2020 as part of the Core Set 2021 for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed to support the 'Cats' and 'Dogs' tribal themes introduced or revitalized in that set, the card serves as a utility land that rewards players for focusing their deck composition on specific animal creature types, reflecting a lighthearted shift in the game's creature focus during that release cycle.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Alayna Danner, whose work frequently captures a sense of warmth and natural wonder within the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Danner’s design depicts a serene, protective woodland space meant to evoke the sanctuary’s function as a haven, effectively visualizing the game mechanic that allows players to return these specific creatures from their graveyard to their hand.
