Start // Fire

Start // Fire was released as part of the 2021 batch of Mystery Booster Playtest cards. These cards were created by Wizards of the Coast for use in the Mystery Booster draft environment, intended to provide a whimsical, experimental experience that subverts traditional Magic: The Gathering rules and design conventions. The set was designed to mimic the aesthetic of internal playtest materials, often featuring stripped-back, minimalist card frames and text that prioritizes mechanical novelty over the final polished design seen in standard sets.

The design of this specific split card reflects the 'Mystery' ethos of exploring mechanics that would not typically pass through the standard R&D vetting process. By combining two disparate card types and effects in an unconventional split format, the design team aimed to provoke player curiosity and highlight the chaotic, fun nature of the playtest environment. The cards were never intended for tournament legality, serving instead as a unique memento for players who experienced the draft events at conventions or local game stores.
