Where it came from
Etali, Primal Storm was introduced in the 2018 Magic: The Gathering expansion Rivals of Ixalan. The card represents an Elder Dinosaur, a powerful creature type central to the set's Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic and the plane of Ixalan, a land defined by exploration, piracy, and deep-jungle mysteries. Its design centers on a chaotic, high-impact ability that allows players to exile the top card of every player's library and cast them without paying their mana costs, embodying the raw, primal essence of the creature.
This specific iteration is a promotional version featuring unique set stamping and an alternate aesthetic treatment. As part of the Rivals of Ixalan promotional release, it was crafted to offer a visually distinct version for tournament players and collectors. The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the sheer scale and aggressive energy of the dinosaur through dynamic lighting and a perspective that emphasizes its dominance over the landscape, ultimately receiving acclaim for its bold color palette and iconic depiction of the character.
