Where it came from
Impetuous Devils was released as part of the Eldritch Moon set in July 2016, a continuation of the gothic horror narrative established in the preceding Shadows over Innistrad expansion. The set centers on the corruption of the plane of Innistrad by the Eldrazi titan Emrakul, forcing familiar creatures and entities to undergo grotesque, reality-warping mutations. This card specifically depicts the chaotic influence of the plane's transformation, serving as a mechanical representation of the set's aggressive, high-risk red mana philosophy.
The artwork was created by illustrator Deruchenko Alexander, who focused on the visceral, alien aesthetics required by the Eldritch Moon design team. The piece captures the sudden, destructive movement of the entity, emphasizing the unstable nature of the plane's denizens during the Eldrazi invasion. Upon release, the card was noted for its distinct 'Haste' and 'Trample' profile, positioning it as a specialized inclusion for players looking to pressure opponents early in a game.
