Provenance

Where it came from

Evelyn, the Covetous was introduced as part of the Streets of New Capenna set released by Wizards of the Coast in 2022. The set explores a 1920s-inspired, Art Deco metropolis run by demon-led crime syndicates, drawing heavily from noir aesthetic traditions and the decadence of the Jazz Age. Evelyn represents the Obscura family, a group of information brokers and magical assassins, fitting into the set's central theme of power struggles and hidden agendas.

The card was illustrated by Anna Steinbauer, who utilized a polished, illustrative style to capture the character's status as a high-society vampire. The design emphasizes themes of theft and resource manipulation, reflecting her role in the narrative as a predatory opportunist. Upon its release, the card became a popular centerpiece for commander players, largely due to its unique mechanics that allow players to play cards exiled from opponents' libraries.
