Where it came from
Obscura Ascendancy was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws inspiration from 1920s Art Deco aesthetics and noir-themed organized crime, focusing on five distinct three-color factions that control the metropolis of New Capenna. This particular card represents the Obscura, a faction of information brokers and magical illusionists who operate from the city's shadows.
The card was illustrated by artist Dominik Mayer, who utilized a sharp, high-contrast style that emphasizes the ornate, geometric sensibilities of the set's setting. As an enchantment card, it mechanically reinforces the faction's identity by rewarding players for creating creature tokens, reflecting the Obscura's penchant for orchestrated distractions and tactical manipulation. It was received by players as a staple for deck archetypes that focus on aggressive board presence and card advantage.
