Where it came from
Leatherhead's Smackdown, numbered 20 in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Eternal Tokens set, was issued as part of an effort to celebrate the enduring legacy of the franchise's expanded rogues' gallery. The set was conceived to highlight key moments of conflict between the Turtles and their mutated adversaries, with this specific card focusing on the volatile, croc-hunting encounter with the mutant alligator Leatherhead.
The artwork was developed to evoke the gritty, high-contrast aesthetic popularized by the original Mirage Studios comic books rather than the softer animation style of later iterations. By utilizing sharp linework and an intense color palette, the designers sought to emphasize Leatherhead's raw power and the claustrophobic tension of the sewers, leading to its favorable reception among fans who appreciate a more faithful, darker interpretation of the source material.
