Where it came from
Everythingamajig first appeared in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering set Unstable, designed by Mark Rosewater. As a card within an 'Un-set,' it was intended to subvert standard gameplay rules, introducing mechanical chaos and humor that prioritize player interaction over traditional competitive rigor. The design team sought to explore the possibilities of 'contraptions' and modular game pieces, allowing the card to function differently depending on the specific iteration and the game state.
The art, illustrated by artist Mark Poole, leans into the surrealist aesthetic characteristic of the Unstable set. It depicts a whimsical, multi-functional contraption that mirrors the card's mechanical complexity. The design was received by the community as a bold experiment in game design, celebrated by casual players for its ingenuity and the way it encourages creative play sessions that deviate from the rigid constraints of tournament-standard Magic.
