Provenance

Where it came from

Evil Presence was released in May 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set, the final installment of the Scars of Mirrodin block for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to mechanically represent the pervasive corruption of the Phyrexians, a recurring faction of biomechanical horrors who seek to integrate all living matter into their singular, twisted vision of perfection. By turning a target land into a Swamp, the enchantment serves as a tool for color disruption, reflecting the themes of environmental corruption central to the set's narrative.

The artwork was commissioned from illustrator Scott Chou, who has provided numerous illustrations for the game. His depiction focuses on the encroaching, oil-slick aesthetic associated with the Phyrexians, utilizing a dark, oppressive color palette to convey a sense of dread and inevitability. The piece was received as a functional, atmospheric common card that effectively reinforces the set's overarching story of a world being systematically overtaken by an artificial, malignant force.
