Evil Presence

Evil Presence was first introduced to the Magic: The Gathering card game in the Alpha set of 1993, representing the early aesthetic of the game's initial design phase. By the time it appeared in the Fourth Edition release in 1995, the card had become a staple of black-aligned control strategies, intended to disrupt an opponent's resource management by turning a land into a Swamp. The Fourth Edition printing maintained the card's function as a low-cost enchantment, reflecting the game's foundational mechanics where terrain manipulation played a significant role in tactical board control.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Sandra Everingham, whose contributions to the game during the mid-nineties leaned into the macabre, high-fantasy tone established by the game's creators. Everingham's depiction sought to visualize the corruption of the natural environment, a thematic focus for the black color identity that emphasized decay and supernatural influence. Like much of the artwork from this era, it was received as a quintessential example of the game’s early visual identity, characterized by distinct painterly techniques that differed significantly from the digital-heavy aesthetic of modern trading card design.
