Provenance

Where it came from

Evil Presence was introduced in the 1994 Unlimited Edition of Magic: The Gathering, following the massive success of the initial Alpha and Beta printings. As the game transitioned into a broader market, this set aimed to fulfill the growing demand for cards that defined the game's early mechanical identity. The card itself represents the early design philosophy of the Enchant World subtype, intended to offer players thematic ways to manipulate the battlefield through dark, atmospheric sorcery.

The artwork for Evil Presence was created by Dan Frazier, one of the original artists whose contribution to the early game helped establish its distinct gothic aesthetic. Frazier sought to capture the feeling of encroaching corruption through minimalist, haunting imagery. While the card is a mechanical curiosity from a formative era of trading card design, it remains a recognized piece of the game's expansive early history and remains a staple for collectors of the original Unlimited base set.
