Where it came from
Evil Presence was released in the 1994 Summer Magic expansion, frequently referred to as the Edgar set by collectors. This print run was an authorized but controversial reprint of the original 1993 Limited Edition (Beta) set, intended to supply the burgeoning demand for Magic: The Gathering cards in Europe. The cards were printed in Belgium and are distinguished by a slightly different card stock and a distinct, brighter ink saturation compared to their American counterparts.
The artwork for Evil Presence was created by Dan Frazier, a foundational illustrator for the early game. His design sought to capture the oppressive, decaying atmosphere of the card's function, which corrupts the land it touches. While the set was initially met with frustration by collectors who feared it would dilute the rarity of the game, it has since become a significant historical artifact representing the rapid globalization of trading card games during the mid-nineties.
