Where it came from
Evolution Witness was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format, drawing heavily on the game's expansive history and themes of evolution, complexity, and cyclical mechanics. The card functions within a green-aligned archetype that rewards players for recurring permanents from the graveyard, echoing design philosophies seen throughout the history of the color.
The card features illustration by artist Campbell White, whose work on the piece emphasizes the biological and transformative nature of the subject. The visual direction highlights a sense of natural mutation, aligning with the set's broader exploration of creatures that adapt to their environment. Upon release, it was noted by players for its efficiency in synergy-heavy strategies, becoming a staple in various deck lists that prioritize graveyard interaction and creature-based value.
