Where it came from
Evolution Witness was released in 2024 as part of the Modern Horizons 3 set for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically for the Modern format, aiming to introduce powerful new cards that expand strategic possibilities for experienced players without being tied to a standard rotation. The card itself exemplifies the set's focus on synergistic graveyard mechanics and the 'mutate' or 're-buy' style of play common to green-aligned creatures in recent expansions.
The card's artwork, illustrated by artist Joshua Raphael, captures the theme of biological adaptation and memory through a surreal, organic aesthetic. Raphael's design emphasizes the creature's role as a biological repository, aligning with the card's mechanical ability to return permanents from the graveyard to the hand. Upon release, it was well-received by players for its efficiency and versatility, becoming a staple in various midrange and combo decks that rely on recurring impactful low-cost permanents.
