Evolution Sage

Evolution Sage was introduced in the War of the Spark expansion in 2019 and later reprinted as part of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan Commander set, which hit shelves in late 2023. The card functions as a core engine for proliferate-themed decks, designed to capitalize on the growth of counters—such as +1/+1, loyalty, or poison—every time a player plays a land. This specific version retains the original mechanics that solidified its place as a staple for green-aligned synergy decks, particularly those focused on long-term board state accumulation.

The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who crafted an image that visually reinforces the 'proliferate' mechanic through themes of rapid, unnatural growth. The artwork captures a sense of dense, sentient flora reclaiming its environment, which aligns with the aesthetic identity of Ixalan’s wild, prehistoric landscape. Upon its release and subsequent reprints, the card was widely received as a highly efficient tool for commander players, praised for its low mana cost and its consistent ability to advance game plans without requiring significant investment.
