Deep Analysis first appeared in the Torment set in 2002, designed as part of the Odyssey block's emphasis on the graveyard as a resource. The card was created to provide blue mages with a card-draw engine that rewarded proactive self-mill strategies, allowing players to cast it from their hand and later flash it back from the graveyard for additional value. This mechanic cemented its reputation as a staple in various constructed formats, particularly those where graveyard synergy is a central pillar of gameplay.

The Commander Masters version, illustrated by Jesper Ejsing, features updated artwork that maintains the card's thematic connection to mental strain and magical excavation. Ejsing's interpretation leans into the dramatic, dark aesthetic typical of the game's high-fantasy art direction.
