Where it came from
Experiment Five was released in 2021 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards collection, a unique set of cards produced by Wizards of the Coast. These cards were designed to be included in select booster packs at conventions and game stores, serving as a creative sandbox where designers could test unconventional mechanics and design spaces that would typically be outside the constraints of standard tournament-legal sets.
The aesthetic and mechanical design of the card reflects the whimsical, experimental philosophy of the Playtest series, often characterized by a monochromatic, hand-sketched look that emphasizes the 'work in progress' nature of the project. It was received by the Magic: The Gathering community as a collectible curiosity, appreciated for its departure from traditional card templates and its role in demonstrating the iterative process behind game development.
