Where it came from
Sunimret was released in 2021 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards, a unique set designed for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were created to offer players a glimpse into the experimental design process, featuring 'playtest' stickers and unconventional mechanics that had not yet been polished for standard tournament play. The set was distributed exclusively through conventions and specific events, serving as a meta-commentary on the game's development cycle.
The card was designed by the Wizards of the Coast R&D team, specifically embracing a 'top-down' design philosophy that focuses on mechanical quirkiness. Its name is 'Terminus' spelled backward, reflecting its function as a time-manipulation effect that resets game states. The artwork is deliberately minimalist and skeletal, consistent with the set's aesthetic of using placeholder assets to keep the focus on the card's disruptive impact on gameplay.
