Where it came from
Experiment Five originated as a playtest card for the 2019 Mystery Booster set, a unique expansion designed for Magic: The Gathering. These cards were explicitly created for the 'Convention Edition' release, serving as a meta-commentary on the game's development process. The aesthetic reflects this, featuring a minimalist, hand-written design style that mimics the early prototypes used by Wizards of the Coast internal design teams during balancing phases.
The card was designed to push the boundaries of traditional card mechanics, leaning into the experimental and often chaotic nature of 'playtest' cards. Because these items were not intended for tournament play and were only available via select convention drafts, they have become prized curiosities. The design philosophy prioritized novelty and humor over long-term stability, capturing a rare, behind-the-scenes look at how developers experiment with new game concepts before they are refined for commercial sets.
