Innocuous Insect

Innocuous Insect was introduced as part of the 2019 Mystery Booster set, a unique release from Wizards of the Coast designed to celebrate the history of Magic: The Gathering. This specific card belongs to the 'Playtest' subset, a collection of cards that mimic the aesthetic of internal development prototypes. These cards were distributed via a specialized 'Playtest Booster' mechanism at events like MagicFest, meant to provide a glimpse into the experimental, often whimsical, design phase of game development.

The design of the card leans into the meta-humor characteristic of these internal prototypes, featuring a stark, minimalist visual style with handwritten-style typography that eschews standard card art in favor of basic text descriptions. By presenting itself as an 'innocuous' creature, it plays on the common tropes of Magic's creature design, intentionally poking fun at the game's obsession with complex mechanics by offering a creature that essentially does nothing. It was well-received by collectors for its role as a piece of meta-commentary on the game's evolution.
