Time Sidewalk

Time Sidewalk was released in 2019 as part of the Mystery Booster Playtest Cards set, a collection of experimental designs distributed at Magic: The Gathering conventions. These cards were created by Wizards of the Coast design teams to explore unconventional mechanics and blue-sky concepts that typically fall outside the boundaries of standard tournament-legal play. The set was designed to capture the chaotic energy of a playtest environment, featuring stark, minimalist visual styling that emphasized mechanical iteration over polished aesthetics.

The card’s design, characterized by its distinctive playtest label and functional aesthetic, reflects the R&D team’s focus on top-down design experiments. By integrating an ability that manipulates the game state in a manner reminiscent of classic temporal magic, the designers aimed to test player reaction to highly complex, high-variance effects. Upon its release, it was received primarily as a curious novelty among collectors who valued the transparency of the development process and the unique, limited-run nature of the playtest series.
