Where it came from
Experimental Lab // Staff Room was released in 2024 as part of the Duskmourn: House of Horror Commander set, a thematic expansion for Magic: The Gathering that pays homage to 1980s horror tropes. This double-faced card captures the set's central conceit of a haunted, ever-shifting mansion, with the front face representing a clinical site of discovery and the back depicting the domestic disarray of a staff room, reinforcing the narrative of a base of operations trapped within a malevolent structure.
The card was designed to facilitate the set's mechanical focus on enchantment synergies and temporary control. The illustration leans into the retro-modernist aesthetic of the Duskmourn plane, utilizing high-contrast lighting and period-specific clutter to evoke a sense of unease. It was received by the player community as a versatile utility tool, valued for its ability to manipulate deck composition and generate board presence, fitting seamlessly into decks that prioritize strategic resource management.
