Where it came from
Familiar's Ruse was originally introduced in the Lorwyn expansion set, designed to reflect the thematic interplay between faeries and their mystical companions in the game's setting. The card functions as a counterspell that requires the player to return a creature to their hand, a mechanic that encourages synergy with creatures possessing powerful enters-the-battlefield abilities, balancing its utility against the cost of slowing one's own board development.
The Modern Masters 2017 version, bearing collector number 37, features artwork by Jaime Jones. The illustration captures a whimsical yet sharp aesthetic that became emblematic of the set's high-fantasy art direction. This reprint was curated for a set focused on reintroducing powerful cards to the Modern format, where it was received by players as a niche but effective tool for decks centered on value-oriented gameplay.
