Where it came from
Family's Favor was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna Commander set, a collection themed around a 1920s-inspired, Art Deco metropolis ruled by five powerful crime syndicates. The card represents the 'Maestros' family, a faction of opulent, vampiric art aficionados who prioritize refinement and lethal precision. Its inclusion in the set serves to mechanically reinforce the faction's identity, centering on the theme of sacrificial resource management.
The artwork, illustrated by Greg Staples, captures the essence of the Maestros' aesthetic by blending gothic elegance with the sharp, geometric lines characteristic of the Art Deco era. The design choices emphasize a sense of dark privilege and careful calculation. Upon release, the card was received as a nuanced utility piece for Commander decks, noted by players for its ability to convert life totals into card advantage while maintaining the atmospheric, noir-inspired tone of the broader New Capenna release.
