Fastbond was originally released as an uncommon card in the Alpha set of Magic: The Gathering in 1993, designed by Richard Garfield as a centerpiece for green-aligned ramp strategies. The card allows players to play additional lands at the cost of life, a mechanic that quickly established it as one of the most powerful and controversial cards in the game's early history due to its ability to accelerate resource development exponentially.
The specific version referenced, known as Summer Magic or Edgar, originated from a limited 1994 reprint intended to correct various errors from the Revised Edition. Due to a series of distribution mishaps and a subsequent recall, most of this print run was destroyed, making the surviving cards some of the rarest collectibles in the trading card game hobby.
