Where it came from
The Fireball card from the Summer Magic set, colloquially known as the Edgar set, represents a unique chapter in the history of Magic: The Gathering. Released in 1994, this set was produced as a corrective print run for the international market, specifically intended to address issues with the initial Revised Edition distribution in certain regions. The cards were printed by Cartamundi in Belgium and are distinguished by a slightly glossier card stock and a distinct color saturation compared to standard sets of the era.
The design of the Fireball card itself originates from the Alpha set, featuring iconic illustration by Christopher Rush. Rush, a foundational artist for the game, utilized a high-contrast, elemental aesthetic to convey the raw destructive power of the spell. While the artwork remained consistent with earlier printings, the Summer Magic version is sought after by specialists due to its scarcity and the fascinating logistical circumstances surrounding its restricted release, which saw much of the inventory withheld from the market for years.
