Prodigal Sorcerer

The Prodigal Sorcerer from the 1994 Summer Magic expansion, often referred to as the Edgar set, occupies a distinct place in Magic: The Gathering history. This set was produced as a replacement for the Revised Edition after it was discovered to contain significant errors, featuring a brighter, more saturated color palette and corrected rules text. It was intended to be a widely distributed core set, but the majority of the print run was destroyed, rendering the remaining cards remarkably rare in the hobby.

The card itself features the iconic illustration by Douglas Shuler, who captured the image of a robed wizard wielding arcane energy. As a staple of early blue decks, the Prodigal Sorcerer was designed to provide a repeatable method of dealing damage, embodying the 'pinging' mechanic that defined much of the game’s early tactical interaction. While the artwork remained consistent with its Alpha and Beta predecessors, the Summer Magic printing is distinguished by its unique card stock and refined aesthetic, which earned it a reputation as one of the most coveted subsets among serious collectors.
