What it does

Look at target opponent's hand and choose a card from it. You control that player until Word of Command finishes resolving. The player plays that card if able. While doing so, the player can activate mana abilities only if they're from lands that player controls and only if mana they produce is spent to activate other mana abilities of lands the player controls and/or to play that card. If the chosen card is cast as a spell, you control the player while that spell is resolving.

Provenance

Where it came from

Word of Command was released in the Limited Edition Beta set for Magic: The Gathering in 1993. As one of the original Alpha and Beta cards, it occupies a significant place in the game's history as part of the 'Reserved List,' a group of cards that Wizards of the Coast has pledged never to reprint in functional form. Its design was intended to capture the flavor of a powerful wizard exerting mental control over an opponent, allowing the caster to essentially step into the opponent's mind and play their cards against them.

The card was illustrated by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic artists from the game's early years who is perhaps best known for his work on the Black Lotus. Rush’s aesthetic for the early sets helped define the gritty, high-fantasy tone of the game, utilizing a distinct, illustrative style that stood out in the nascent trading card game market. While the card is mechanically complex and saw limited competitive play, it remains a highly sought-after piece of gaming ephemera due to its scarcity and the nostalgic significance of the Beta set.
