Winter Orb

Winter Orb was introduced in the Limited Edition Alpha and Beta sets of Magic: The Gathering in 1993. Designed as a rare artifact, it was created during the game's formative period by Richard Garfield to introduce strategic resource restriction, forcing players to carefully manage their mana production. The card's design philosophy centered on shifting the game's momentum by preventing players from untapping their lands during their untap phase, effectively slowing down the pace of play.

The iconic illustration by Mark Tedin depicts a frozen, crystalline sphere suspended in a stark environment, perfectly capturing the card's theme of stasis and cold.
