Where it came from
Tezzeret's Gambit was first introduced in the New Phyrexia expansion in 2011, representing the culmination of the Phyrexian invasion of the Mirrodin plane. The card depicts the planeswalker Tezzeret manipulating the flow of corrupted oil to gain an advantage, visually reinforcing his role as an agent for the Phyrexians. Its design features the 'proliferate' mechanic, which allowed players to advance counters on permanents and players, a signature ability of the set's dark, transformative themes.
For the Modern Masters 2015 reprint, the card was included as an uncommon to support the set's artifact and counter-based archetypes. The illustration by Jana Schirmer and Johannes Voss maintains the original's stark, clinical aesthetic, utilizing a color palette of blues and cold metallics that emphasizes the artificer's cold, calculating nature. Upon its initial release and subsequent reprints, it was widely praised by players for its efficiency in synergy-heavy decks, becoming a staple for those utilizing planeswalkers or +1/+1 counter strategies.
