Where it came from
Gandalf, Friend of the Shire was released as a promotional card for the 2023 MagicFest series, specifically designed to celebrate the convergence of the Lord of the Rings franchise with the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This card was issued as part of a series of special foil treatments and promotional items distributed to attendees of the events, serving as a commemorative keepsake for fans of both J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium and the tactical gameplay of Wizards of the Coast.
The card features an illustration by Dan Dos Santos, who sought to capture the contemplative and benevolent essence of Gandalf during his time in the Shire. The aesthetic leans into a warm, painterly style that emphasizes the character's role as a guide rather than a warrior. Upon its release, the card was well-received by collectors for its unique frame treatment and the thematic resonance of the character's depiction, solidifying its place as a sought-after memento of the multi-year collaborative project between the two properties.
