Provenance

Where it came from

Ghitu Encampment was originally released in the Urza's Legacy expansion in 1999, designed as part of a cycle of uncommon lands that could animate into creatures. The card represents the nomadic Ghitu tribes of Shiv, a faction central to the narrative of the Weatherlight Saga. By allowing a land to become a 2/1 first strike warrior, Wizards of the Coast provided players with a mana-efficient utility tool that could pressure opponents during the late game while remaining difficult for typical removal spells to target.

For the Duel Decks: Speed vs. Cunning release in 2014, the card featured updated art by the acclaimed landscape illustrator John Avon. Avon is widely celebrated within the Magic: The Gathering community for his sweeping, atmospheric depictions of natural environments. His contribution to this specific printing emphasizes the arid, sun-baked aesthetic of Shiv, grounding the mechanical function of the card in the harsh, rugged topography of the region.
