Where it came from
Ghitu Encampment first appeared in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, designed as part of a cycle of utility lands that could transform into creatures. This design choice provided players with a mana-efficient way to maintain board presence in the late game, effectively turning excess land into a combatant. The card reflects the lore of the Ghitu, a nomadic tribe of pyromancers residing in the Shiv region of Dominaria, known for their mastery of fire magic and resilience in harsh desert environments.
The version included in the 2010 Premium Deck Series: Fire and Lightning features specialized foil treatment, a hallmark of this supplemental product intended to showcase iconic red-aligned cards. While the original illustration by Franz Vohwinkel captured the arid, volcanic aesthetic of the Ghitu lands, this premium printing allowed the artwork to shine through a high-gloss finish. The deck itself was well-regarded by the community for its curated selection of aggressive cards, aiming to provide a cohesive, ready-to-play experience for fans of the color red.
