Provenance

Where it came from

Gisa and Geralf first appeared in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Eldritch Moon. Designed as a legendary creature card, it centers on the sibling rivalry between the necromancer Gisa and the stitcher Geralf, two popular characters from the lore of the Innistrad plane. The card was mechanically intended to support zombie-themed tribal decks, allowing players to cast zombies directly from their graveyard.

The card features artwork by Karla Ortiz, who sought to capture the contrasting personalities of the two siblings. The design reflects their chaotic and morbid nature, emphasizing the dark, gothic aesthetic that defines the Innistrad setting. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for both its flavorful representation of the characters and its utility in Commander format decks, leading to its inclusion on The List, a curated selection of cards reprinted in set boosters.
