Where it came from
Gisa and Geralf first appeared in the 2016 Magic: The Gathering expansion Eldritch Moon. Designed by the Wizards of the Coast development team, the card depicts the twin necromancers of Innistrad, characters established in the original Innistrad block who represent the iconic white-blue-black conflict of the plane’s horror-themed setting. The card was crafted to mechanically capture their flavor as sibling rivals who both specialize in reanimating the dead, allowing players to cast Zombie creatures directly from their graveyard.
The art for this card was created by Karla Ortiz, a prominent illustrator known for her work within the franchise. Ortiz aimed to capture the tense, chaotic dynamic between the two siblings, focusing on their contrasting magical styles and their shared obsession with flesh-crafting. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its synergy with tribal Zombie decks and its evocative representation of the lore, marking a significant moment for two of the game’s most popular villainous characters.
