Where it came from
Gisa and Geralf were originally introduced in the 2016 set Shadows over Innistrad, designed as a legendary creature pair representing the feuding necromantic siblings of the Innistrad plane. This particular version was reprinted for the Starter Commander Decks released in 2022, a product line intended to provide accessible, ready-to-play options for players entering the Commander format. The art, originally created by Karla Ortiz, captures the siblings' dark, competitive dynamic as they command their respective armies of the undead.
The character design reflects the gothic horror aesthetic central to the Innistrad setting. Gisa, a ghoulcaller who revels in the chaotic raising of zombies, and Geralf, a skaaberen who approaches necromancy with clinical, scientific precision, were established by Wizards of the Coast writers to flesh out the world's deep lore. Upon their initial release, the card was well-received by players for its flavor-accurate mechanics, which allow players to cast Zombie creatures directly from their graveyard, effectively simulating the siblings' mastery over death.
