Where it came from
Gishath, Sun's Avatar was released in 2017 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Ixalan. The card was designed to serve as the centerpiece for the Dinosaur creature type, which was introduced as a major mechanical theme in the set. Its creation was inspired by the plane's mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic, where massive, magically-infused dinosaurs serve as the sacred mounts and protectors for the Sun Empire.
The illustration was created by artist Tyler Jacobson, who was tasked with capturing the sheer scale and regal intensity of the creature. Jacobson focused on emphasizing its legendary status through vibrant, warm colors and a commanding posture. Upon its release, the card was widely received by players as a definitive 'tribal' commander, becoming a staple in the Commander format for those seeking to build decks around the Dinosaur archetype.
