Where it came from
Gishath, Sun's Avatar was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan set for Magic: The Gathering. This specific version is a promotional printing featuring unique frame treatment, released to commemorate the debut of the dinosaur-themed plane of Ixalan. The card was designed to serve as the definitive commander for tribal dinosaur decks, embodying the raw, prehistoric power of the Sun Empire’s primary deity.
The artwork was created by Zack Stella, who aimed to capture the massive scale and religious significance of the creature within the game's lore. The design focused on a vibrant, golden-hued aesthetic that distinguishes it from standard set releases. Upon its arrival, the card was received warmly by the player base, particularly within the Commander format, where it became a cornerstone for players looking to synergize high-cost, aggressive creature strategies.
