Where it came from
Gishath, Sun's Avatar was first introduced in the 2017 set Rivals of Ixalan as a centerpiece for the Dinosaur creature type. The character represents the primal, divine force of the Sun Empire, depicted as a massive, armored creature that embodies the transition between life and death. This specific promotional iteration, collector number 229s from The Lost Caverns of Ixalan release, features a unique art treatment designed to highlight the creature's immense scale and its role as a venerated deity within the Ixalan setting.
The artwork for this version was commissioned to emphasize the vibrant, Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic that defines the Sun Empire’s visual identity. By utilizing high-contrast lighting and dynamic posing, the illustrator sought to capture the ferocious majesty intended by the Wizards of the Coast design team. Upon its re-release within the promotional framework of The Lost Caverns of Ixalan, the card was received warmly by players who favor tribal archetypes, serving as both a powerful mechanical asset and a visually distinct collectible that bridges the gap between the original Ixalan block and the return to the plane.
