Where it came from
The Gixian Puppeteer was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set The Brothers' War. The card depicts a mechanical agent serving the Phyrexians, reflecting the set's thematic focus on the historical conflict between the brothers Urza and Mishra. This conflict serves as one of the foundational narratives in the game's long-running lore, reimagining early Magic history through a modern aesthetic lens.
The card's illustration was crafted by artist Caio Monteiro, who employed a grim, industrial aesthetic to emphasize the Puppeteer's role in manipulating the battlefield. Design-wise, the card was engineered to provide utility for decks focused on graveyard interaction and resource recursion. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its ability to enable aggressive strategies, fitting seamlessly into the artifact-heavy synergy prevalent throughout the set.
