Where it came from
Gixian Puppeteer was released as part of The Brothers' War expansion in 2022, serving as a specialized promotional version of the card. The set itself was designed as a nostalgic exploration of the lore surrounding the titular conflict between Urza and Mishra, two pivotal figures in the history of the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. This specific iteration was distributed through promotional channels, often appearing as a foil treatment to incentivize participation in local game store events during the set's release window.
The illustration was crafted to evoke the gruesome, industrial aesthetic of the Phyrexians, the mechanical antagonists central to the set's narrative. By focusing on the manipulative and dark nature of the Gixian cult, the artwork aims to ground the player in the high-stakes conflict of the era. The piece reflects the design team's broader effort to bridge modern card mechanics with the classic, grim tone that defined the original Brothers' War lore from the late 1990s, receiving appreciation from collectors who value both gameplay utility and thematic cohesion.
