Where it came from
The Gixian Puppeteer was released in 2022 as part of the promotional suite for The Brothers' War, a Magic: The Gathering expansion that revisited the foundational lore of the franchise. The card depicts a mechanical agent of the Phyrexians, serving as a narrative callback to the original conflict between brothers Urza and Mishra. This specific promotional variant features a unique border treatment, designed to emphasize the industrial and artifact-heavy aesthetic that defined the set's mechanical focus.
The artwork was commissioned to lean into the unsettling, biomechanical horror associated with the Phyrexian faction, portraying the Puppeteer as a looming, sinister figure manipulating the battlefield. The design process focused on translating the deep-seated lore of the original 1990s storyline into a modern card frame, utilizing stylized, metallic hues that signal the set's identity as a tribute to the game's earliest history. It was well-received by players and collectors who value continuity in the game's long-running visual storytelling.
