Provenance

Where it came from

The Island card numbered 265 from the Ixalan set, released by Wizards of the Coast in September 2017, belongs to a series of basic lands designed to immerse players in the plane of Ixalan. This setting was conceptualized as a Mesoamerican-inspired world featuring distinct factions such as pirate crews, conquistador-like explorers, and dinosaur-riding warriors. The artwork for this specific card was created by Jonas De Ro, who utilized a lush, vibrant color palette to evoke the dense, uncharted tropical landscapes central to the set's exploration theme.

Jonas De Ro’s design choice for this card emphasizes the mystical and perilous nature of the Ixalan coastline, balancing the traditional utility of a basic land with the thematic richness of the expansion. Within the broader context of Magic: The Gathering, lands like this one serve as the foundational building blocks of player decks, and the artwork received positive attention for its cinematic quality, which helped establish the visual identity of the Ixalan block upon its launch.
