Where it came from
Granny's Payback was released in 2004 as part of Unhinged, the second silver-bordered parody set designed by Wizards of the Coast for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Created to explore unconventional gameplay mechanics and humor that would not fit within the game's standard competitive tournament rules, the set relied on meta-commentary and absurdity to subvert traditional expectations of card interactions.
The card was illustrated by Ron Spencer, a prominent artist known for his gritty, high-contrast style that frequently graced early Magic expansions. The design serves as a humorous riff on the trope of the elderly relative, utilizing a 'gotcha' mechanic that rewards players for interacting with the game's physical environment. Upon its debut, it was received as a lighthearted novelty intended primarily for casual play rather than serious competitive strategy.
