Where it came from
Staying Power was released in 2004 as part of Unhinged, the second silver-bordered Magic: The Gathering expansion designed for casual, humorous play. The set was conceived by head designer Mark Rosewater as a way to explore mechanics that broke the traditional rules of the game, pushing the boundaries of what was possible within the card framework. This particular card was intended to create long-lasting board states by preventing the removal of static effects, leaning into the set's theme of mechanical absurdity.
The card features illustration by Matt Cavotta, who frequently contributed art to Magic throughout the early 2000s. Cavotta's visual style for Unhinged leaned into whimsical, exaggerated character designs that complemented the tongue-in-cheek nature of the set. Upon release, the card was received as a quintessential Unhinged staple, noted by players for its ability to create complex and often chaotic gameplay interactions that would be impossible under standard tournament rules.
