Grave Pact

Grave Pact first appeared in the Stronghold expansion in 1998, designed as a powerful enchantment for the Magic: The Gathering card game. The card was crafted to reward players for sacrificing their own creatures, creating a punishing effect that forced opponents to sacrifice a creature whenever one of the owner's creatures was put into a graveyard. This design reflects the game's exploration of black mana's themes of death, decay, and tactical sacrifice, providing a significant board control advantage that has remained a staple in multiplayer formats.

The Eighth Edition printing, which features the card with the collector number 137, marked the game's tenth anniversary and introduced a new, modern card frame design. Illustrated by Kev Walker, the artwork depicts a grim, ritualistic scene that emphasizes the oppressive nature of the card's effect. Upon its release in the core set, it was received as a cornerstone of black-aligned control decks, solidifying its reputation among players as one of the most effective and evocative cards of its era.
