Where it came from
Grave Pact first appeared in the Stronghold expansion in 1998, designed as a powerful enchantment that forces opponents to sacrifice a creature whenever one of the player's own creatures is put into a graveyard. It was crafted to lean into the black color identity of sacrifice-based attrition, becoming a staple in Commander and various casual formats for its ability to exert board control through inevitability.
The Enchanting Tales version, released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine set in 2023, serves as a special bonus sheet printing featuring the unique, fairytale-inspired visual aesthetic of the plane. While the mechanics remain identical to the original, this edition updates the art and frame to match the storybook motif of the set, catering to collectors who favor thematic cohesion and stylized illustration.
