Where it came from
Grave Pact first appeared in the 1997 Stronghold expansion as a powerful enchantment designed to punish opponents for killing a player's creatures. Its mechanical identity centers on sacrifice and board control, reflecting the darker, tactical side of black-aligned magic in the game's early years. The card has remained a staple in multiplayer formats like Commander due to its ability to create significant asymmetrical pressure when combined with sacrifice outlets.
The Enchanting Tales version, released in 2023 for Wilds of Eldraine, reinterprets the card with art by Wylie Beckert. As part of a bonus sheet celebrating iconic enchantments, this printing adopts the storybook-inspired aesthetic of the Eldraine plane. Beckert’s illustration emphasizes a gothic, ethereal tone that aligns with the card’s morbid theme, and the treatment was well-received for its stylistic departure from the original utilitarian art, positioning it as a highly sought-after aesthetic upgrade for collectors.
