Where it came from
Grave Pact first appeared in the Stronghold expansion in 1998, designed by Mike Elliott as part of the Rath Cycle. It was created to embody the black-aligned philosophy of sacrifice, where players gain a tactical advantage by paying a steep cost in their own resources. The card was illustrated by Heather Hudson, whose dark, evocative style captured the morbid thematic essence of the effect, which forces opponents to discard creatures in response to the controller losing their own.
The Planechase 2012 release featured a reprint of Grave Pact, which kept the original mechanics intact while introducing it to the multiplayer-focused format.
